January 20 – Jimmy Carter is inaugurated president.
January 28 – The infamous “Blizzard of ‘77” paralyzes the Midwest and East Coast, resulting in a severe shortage of natural gas and coal.
July 13 – Lightning causes a 25 hour blackout in New York City. Extensive looting and arson ensues. 3,776 looters arrested and over $135 million in damage caused.
August 10 – “Son of Sam” David Berkowitz and his dog are arrested in New York City following a 13 month murder spree.
August 16 – “The King of Rock & Roll” Elvis Presley dies on the throne at Graceland in Memphis at the age of 42. Sightings of Elvis begin across the country.
August - First day of high school for the Class of 1981. Lincoln will never be the same again.
September 7 – President Carter transfers control of the Panama Canal to Panama by the year 2000.
October 20 – A plane carrying the band Lynrd Skynrd crashes killing three members.
